How Does My Work Experience and Education Impact My Disability Claim

Even with a disability law firm, applying for disability in New Jersey can be a very difficult ordeal. While your lawyer will clear up any of your questions, it can be a good idea to have some idea of how the process works. You’ve undoubtedly been asked to explain all sorts of details from your life, and you may be wondering what those details have to do with your disability claim. Specifically, your work experience and educational background seem to have nothing do with your condition that prevents you from doing your current job.

So why does the Social Security Administration require these details? When awarding or turning down a claim the Social Security Administration looks at your condition and medical history and all of the responsibilities of your current job. If your condition limits your ability to do your current job, they then look at other jobs you may be qualified to do. They will not only look at the jobs you had, but all aspects of that job including your responsibilities, the physical demands, and any difficulties you may have had at that job. Using your previous work experience the Social Security Administration will construct a list of jobs that your experience would make you a good candidate for. If there a lot of jobs that you could still do with your condition and your work experience, it’s often more likely that your claim could be denied. They look at your educational history in a similar way. The more education you have, the more that you should be able to adapt and have more job opportunities. The Social Security Administration also considers other types of education besides formal education. They will take into account special training for jobs as well as vocational school and similar experiences. Again, the higher level of education you have the more of a negative impact it can have on your disability claim.  In New Jersey, a disability law firm can help you in gathering you work and educational history, if needed.
